It's a daunting process to find the right breeder and the right puppy. Although we won't bring our Havanese puppy home until mid-September, we were quite impressed this summer with our selection experiences of our female puppy, Sunny Day, through Dr. J's Havanese in Raleigh, NC.
I've owned AKC champion Airedales for 22 years. Now, we wanted a purebred AKC small, sturdy, and gregarious dog to be a buddy to our larger, aging Airedale. I researched several breeds and breeders in both Carolinas and Georgia. One GA breeder was most likely a scam—so beware! I found Dr J's Havanese and began my inquiry.
Dr. Jennifer Shaw promptly called me to discuss the many questions that I had emailed. That was not the case with other breeders. We talked extensively about the breed, personality, and general care of the puppy. She also was quite responsive to other inquiries about the puppy's lineage, the breed's health stability, their living arrangements, her guarantees, and pre-pickup puppy care.
We drove 6 hours down crazy I-85 to Raleigh to meet everyone, two and four-legged. Where a dog lives says a lot about its level of responsible care and socializing.
When we arrived at Jennifer's beautiful home to see the litter, all was clean, inviting, and calm. Jennifer is very laid back, pleasant, and an open communicator. Her husband seemed equally adept.
The 4-legged Havanese parents were playful and had been outside, evident by their dirty forelegs. They weren't put on display as perfect dogs. We could readily observe that they were fun dogs having a fun romp in their fenced area. The five 4-wk old puppies smelled their mom's presence, and the cacophony of "feed me" began! 🤣
Tom and I spent over an hour with Dr. Shaw and the puppies. We were totally at ease in our decision to buy from Dr. J's Havanese. At times, Jennifer spoke personally as a loving Havanese "fur mom"; however, at other times, her professional training as a practicing veterinarian of 20+ years was front and center and reassuring. She clearly understands the physical and emotional profiles of dogs, especially this breed.
We are so excited about Sunny!
I'll continue our story about our new fur baby's adjustment with us and our Airedale Shady. Sunny and Shady—great combination!
If you are interested, follow me on Facebook and Instagram where Sunny's progress will unveil in text and photos. Thanks, Dr Jennifer Shaw, for walking your talk.

Jennifer, Bill, Mary and Alice, California
I must have been living under a rock not to have discovered this truly loving, spunky, sweet, sassy, devoted, playful and incredibly smart breed, the Havanese. After a good amount of research we were led to Dr. Jennifer’s Havanese and to our little angel, Lula. The moment we laid eyes on her we fell in love! Jennifer was such a pleasure to work with as we chose our baby and the love that she and her family shower on her puppies is really what sets her Havanese apart. When we picked up Lula she didn’t even cry. She was held and loved so much by Jennifer and her family that she was already very secure. When we arrived home she immediately embraced our other dog Alice as her new best friend. When we put Lula in her new crate the 1st night we braced ourselves for a sleepless night only to find that not only did Lula not cry, she slept peacefully through the night (and still does!). Now she puts herself to bed in her crate. She is not barky at all, she is very sharp and always, always filled with a happy sunshiny personality. She was easy to train and she has brought such sunshine to our lives. My 13-year old daughter who loves to ride horses, has got little Lula jumping small horse jumps every day (which Lula loves). I highly recommend Jennifer’s Havanese. She is caring, loving and professional and I would get another Havanese from her if I could!
My life is complete again. There has been a hole in my heart for 8 years. We had a chocolate lab for 16 years, and the day we put her down was one of the saddest days of my life.
We got a puggle a few years ago, and we could not train that puppy. We tried for 6 months, and he just didn't listen. I honestly think the poor dog didn't know if he was a hound or a dog!! We did find a good home for him, and I thought I would never have a dog again. I couldn't bring myself to get another chocolate lab because I felt that I would always be comparing that dog to my beloved Snickers, and that would be so unfair.
Flynn is the best puppy that I have ever had, or ever imagined. He is so loving, he listens, he is almost completely potty trained (outside), and he HATED the leash a few days ago. We tried it again today, and he trotted along without any problem. Think he trusts us now, and knows how much we love him. I seriously cannot believe how much we could love a puppy that we have had for only four days. We love him so much, and he loves us back. A dog makes a house a home, and Flynn has a forever home with us. The only time he goes in the crate is at night. Bedtime is 8:30 pm, we tell him..."ok Flynn, time to go into your room" and he goes right in the crate..he hasn't messed the crate at all yet. No crying at all.
I cannot thank you enough, no idea how I even stumbled on your site, but so grateful I did. I didn't want a puppy mill dog, and searched some sites where "breeders" state that the pups are raised in their homes. Digging into how many pups they had for sale, like 40 or 50, I knew there was no way these pups were raised in homes.
My daughter's friend has a Havenese, and she posts pictures of him all the time, I loved the look of the dog, and started researching and everything I read was exactly what we wanted, but...still never imagined a puppy could be this good!!!
The earliest appointment we could get for his Vet appointment is next Monday, we told them that he was due for his next shots, on 9-30, they assured me a week late is ok, do you agree?? I want to make sure we are giving Flynn the best possible care, and if need be, I will find a Vet that can see him sooner if you think we shouldn't wait until Monday.
Again, from the absolute bottom of my now complete heart, thank you!!
